Kakaako
Kakaako
stretches from Honolulu Harbor to Ala Moana near Waikiki.
Kakaako is the name of a commercial and retail dirstrict of
Honolulu, nestled between Ala Moana near Waikiki to the east, downtown
Honolulu and Honolulu Harbor to the west.
Kakaako is situated along the southern shores of the island of
Oahu and features a vast stretch of waterfront.
The 600-acre Kakaako District is bounded by Pikoi, King,
Punchbowl Streets and Ala Moana Boulevard.
The District also
includes the water front area from Kewalo Basin to Forrest Avenue.
Once
a light industrial district with numerous dilapidated warehouses, in
recent decades Kakaako has been the focus of a major urban renewal
effort, led by the Hawaii
Community Development Authority with the intent to ring public and
private funds and resources together to redevelop the entire area.
Some say Kakaako may be the “new heart of Honolulu” with such
spectacular new developments as the Victoria Ward Center and the Kakaako
Waterfront Park.
The
Kakaako District development
plans and rules are designed to guide the redevelopment of this former
warehouse area into a vibrant mixed-use urban community with
residential, commercial, industrial, and other uses. The development
plans explain the general goals and objectives for redevelopment, while
the development rules detail specific zoning regulations.
The
civic centers of Kakaako are Victoria Ward Centers and the Neil S.
Blaisdell Center. Across the street
from Victoria Ward Centers is the newly constructed campus of the John
A. Burns School of Medicine. Kakaako is currently a hot bed of
development with ambitious and modern image-setting projects, such as a
new stand-alone cancer center. The main roads through Kakaako are Ala
Moana Boulevard and Kapiolani Boulevard.
